Scavenging

(This is basically a place for me to post Oreo whenever I feel like it without needing anyone to reply. But feel free to join in if you want. But don't be surprised if she tries to run away from you. She doesn't trust anyone)

Oreo



Oreo sniffed at the garbage lying all over the darkened alley. It was almost midnight so it was very dark. Their were no lights here in the back alley slums. There used to be but they had broken who knows how long ago. oreo only came out at night when the humans mostly slept at least in this are of the city. It was when she considered it to be the safest time of the day to go out to search for food.

Her nose tickled with the scent of something edible. She sniffed the air wagging her tail ever so little in her excitement. Following the scent closer to the edge of the alley than Oreo liked, she found a trash cat brimming with garbage. It was still standing up and not tipped over like many others. She whimpered softly and scratched at it trying to figure out how to tip it over. 

A skittering sound made her jump and spin towards it. Realizing it was a rat she took off after it. She could hear it's shriek of alarm when it realized she was chasing it. Oreo drew closer almost at it's tail. The rat spotted a crack in the wall and darted towards it. Oreo seeing what it had planned took her chance and leaped at hit sinking her nails in it's tail holding it back from escape just long enough for her to grab it with her teeth. The rat began to panic but before it could do anything Oreo bit down breaking it's spine and killing it. Tonight she would feast.

Looking around Oreo made sure no one was watching her before she began to carefully make her way back to the box a few alleys down she had slept in that day. Oreo never stayed in a place long but the box had given her some protecting from the cold winter win and the snow. It wasn't much but it was better then nothing.

Oreo returned to her box which was starting to sag from the wet snow. She wouldn't be able to sleep here again. She would need to go in search of a new place to sleep that night. But for now she would stay put and eat her meal before moving on. "Man I sure got lucky today, I haven't caught any freshkill in a few days." Oreo licked her lips and smiled panting slightly. Then without hesitation she began to slowly eat the rat trying to make it last as long as possible. It tasted delicious after the human trash she'd been eating the last few days. Once she was finished she picked up the remains and carried them outside the box and tossed them to the side. There was no way to bury them here under the hard ground. 

Turning to look at the box she sighed knowing she needed to find a more permanent place to sleep for the remainder of the winter season. "Well hears hoping I don't run into the Dark Moon Pack at the very least. As long as I stay away from the park I should be fine." Oreo peaked out of the alley her box was in. The streets were practically deserted except for a few homeless humans standing around a container with a fire in it. She could see a couple dogs circling the humans feet and shuddered. She need to stay as far from them as possible.

Turning Oreo headed the opposite direction of the humans and the dogs. She hoped none of them saw her as she slowly and quietly slinked away in the shadows. After a few minutes she let out a sigh of relief no one had seen her. Or at the very least no one had chased after her. 

The night was starting to fade when Oreo finally decided to try what appeared to be an abandoned human house that was in extremely rough condition. One of the walls had begun to crumble away and the front door was completely gone. She hung outside the house and sniffed the air for any signs of life. She listened for any sound as she slowly stepped into the building. She didn't smell anything except for mice, rats, and maybe a squirrel or two. She heard the sound of mice and rats skittering away but her belly was still full. There was no one here, it was safe... for now. 

Spotting a very old couch with sagging cushions Oreo jumped onto it and yawned. It had been a long night. She gave her tail a couple thumps happy that she had found a safer and warmer place to stay for the winter that even had a source of food. With a full belly Oreo slowly drifted off to sleep.

The next evening dawned early as it tends to do in the winter. Oreo stretched out and yawned before opening her eyes. She jumped to her paws in alarm before remembering she had moved into this abandoned building the night before. Relaxing she laid back down taking a moment to just relax and not worry about having to find a new place again tonight. If she was lucky Oreo could possibly make this her forever home as long as no one else stumbled upon this perfect little place. After a while Oreo decided to get up and head out for a walk. She could hear mice scampering about in the house and decided if she couldn't find anything while out she'd try and catch something when she got home later.

Oreo poked her out of the open wall where a door once was and looked around. Seeing no one she sniffed the air. Just because she could see no one didn't mean there wasn't someone in hiding somewhere. But other then the mice that shared her home there was no fresh scents around her home. Slowly she made her way down the street. Many humans were still awake inside their homes. It wasn't that late maybe six or seven pm. Oreo began patrolling the area to try and figure out where to place her scent marker so other dogs knew this was her home. The first scent marker was an old birch tree just a few steps from her house. She made another one at a fire hydrant next to the road a little further. Every few feet or so she stopped to leave her scent around the house she claimed as her own. Once Oreo was sure there was a clear border around her house she decided to go and explore the other streets to see what she could find.
